design.md

An early Markdown convention for declaring a project's design system to design-aware coding agents.

Summary

design.md is the newest and least-settled member of the agent-readable web standards family — an alpha convention from Google Labs for declaring a project’s design system (tokens, type, color, layout rules) to design-aware coding agents in plain Markdown. Where AGENTS.md tells an agent how to build, design.md tells it how the result should look.

How it fits

It extends the same operator-authored, plain-text, well-known-file pattern from engineering to design. Its governance is the least mature of the family — a single corporation, in alpha.

Why it matters here

design.md shows the agent-readable web standards pattern still expanding into new domains, each a new facet of operator control — the defining axis of the Independent Internet.
